First Time Spray Tan
Getting a spray tan for the first time? These are the questions most first-timers ask.
What happens at your first spray tan appointment? It is quick, comfortable, and much easier than most people expect.
What is a spray tan?
A spray tan is a sunless tanning treatment using DHA, which reacts with the top layer of your skin to create a golden colour. It is UV-free and fades naturally over time.
How does the session work?
Here is the usual step-by-step flow:
- Consultation: Jess will chat about your desired shade and skin type to recommend the right formula for you.
- Prep: You'll change into a disposable undergarment or minimal swimwear of your choice. Any barrier areas (like palms and nails) are protected.
- Application: Using a professional HVLP spray gun, Jess applies the solution in smooth, even strokes. The whole process takes just 15–20 minutes.
- Drying: The solution dries within 5–10 minutes. Once dry, you're good to get dressed in your loose, dark outfit.
- Development: Over the next 4–8 hours, your colour deepens and develops. Your first shower rinses off the guide bronzer to reveal your true, natural-looking colour underneath.
Which shade should I choose for my first spray tan?
If you are unsure, start lighter. You can always go darker next time once you know how the colour sits on your skin.

$50What do first-time clients usually ask?
Will my spray tan look orange?
No. A professional application uses natural undertones, so the developed colour should look golden and realistic rather than orange.
Does a spray tan smell?
There can be a mild DHA scent while it develops, but it fades after your first shower.
Is a spray tan safe during pregnancy?
It is generally considered safe when applied topically, but you should always check with your GP if you are pregnant.
What if I have sensitive skin?
Let Jess know before your appointment. That way the most suitable formula can be chosen for your skin type and any sensitivities.
How long will my tan last?
A professionally applied spray tan usually lasts about 7–10 days with good aftercare. See our How Long Does It Last? guide for more detail.
What are the best first-timer tips?
- Start with Light/Medium — you can always go darker next session.
- Exfoliate the night before for an even, smooth base.
- Don't stress about the guide bronzer — it washes off to reveal your real colour!
- Wear loose, dark clothes to and after your appointment.
- Moisturise every day to extend and even out the fade.
What should you ask before booking your first spray tan?
Ask which shade suits your skin tone, how long to wait before showering, and what aftercare will keep the colour even. Those three questions cover most first-timer concerns.
